The bill to establish the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, who represents the Cross River South Senatorial District, has officially received presidential assent.
This development was announced on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who stated, “I would like to inform distinguished senators that Mr. President has assented to the remaining regional development bills, namely the South-West Development Commission Bill and the South-South Development Commission Bill.”
Initially passed in October 2024, the SSDC Bill was later sent to the House of Representatives for concurrence.
This commission is poised to act as an engine of industrial expansion, job creation, and social progress. It aims to promote sustainable development across the oil-rich South-South region, ensuring its resources benefit every community.
