OPINION: Five Lessons Every Corporate Organisation Must Learn About Communication Strategy in 2026 – By Eno Onun

Communication is no longer just about telling the public what your organisation does; it is about influencing what the public understands, believes and remembers about your organisation.

In today’s environment, where information travels rapidly, public opinion changes quickly, and one poorly handled incident can damage years of reputation-building, corporate communication must become more strategic, proactive, transparent and audience-focused.

As a communication strategist, here are five  lessons I believe corporate organisations should take seriously in 2026.

1. Move from publicity to reputation management:

For too long, some organisations have measured communication success by the number of press releases published, newspaper mentions secured or social media posts made.

But visibility does not automatically translate into credibility.

In 2026, organisations must move beyond publicity to deliberately build and protect their reputations. Every press statement, customer interaction, management decision and public response contributes to how people perceive the brand.

The lesson: Do not merely ask, “How many people saw our message?” Ask, “What do people now think about us because of that message?”

2. Do not wait for a crisis before communicating

Silence can create an information vacuum, and someone else may fill it with speculation, misinformation or an interpretation that damages your organisation.

When a product fails, a customer complains publicly, an employee raises an allegation or a service goes down, the organisation’s response time and quality can influence public perception.

Companies should establish crisis communication protocols before a crisis occurs. They should know who speaks, what can be disclosed, how quickly an initial response should be issued and how updates will reach affected stakeholders.

The lesson: Your crisis communication strategy should be ready before the crisis, not written while the crisis is unfolding.

3. Treat employees as communication ambassadors

One mistake organisations make is investing heavily in external communication while neglecting internal communication.

Employees who do not understand their organisation’s vision, policies or decisions may struggle to represent it confidently. Worse, poor internal communication can create rumours, resentment and contradictory messages.

Staff should understand the company’s values, strategic priorities and public commitments. They should also have credible internal channels for asking questions and raising concerns.

This does not mean turning every employee into an official spokesperson. It means building a workforce that understands and can accurately explain the organisation.

The lesson: Before asking the public to believe in your brand, ensure your employees understand what the brand stands for.

4. Make trust more important than virality

The pressure to trend, generate engagement and dominate online conversations can tempt organisations to exaggerate achievements, make promises they cannot fulfil or respond emotionally to criticism.

Such tactics may produce temporary attention but can undermine long-term credibility.

In 2026, corporate organisations should prioritise accurate information, realistic promises, evidence-based claims and consistency between what they say and what they do.

Artificial intelligence makes this even more important. As AI-generated content becomes easier to produce, audiences need stronger reasons to trust corporate messages.

The lesson: Attention can be purchased, but trust must be earned and maintained.

5. Listen before you communicate

Communication should not be a one-way exercise in which management develops a message and pushes it to the public without understanding audience concerns.

Companies need to listen to customers, employees, journalists, industry commentators and other stakeholders. Media monitoring, customer feedback, surveys, stakeholder consultations and sentiment analysis can help identify concerns before they become major reputational problems.

However, listening is useful only when organisations act on what they learn.

For example, if customers repeatedly complain about delayed deliveries, an advertising campaign promising excellent service will not solve the underlying problem.

The lesson: Effective communication begins with understanding your audience, not simply preparing your message.
