Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and the party’s Vice Presidential Candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, stormed Port Harcourt yesterday for the NDC Obi-Talks Port Harcourt Town Hall, where they engaged party members, supporters and residents on the challenges facing Nigerians and the need to restore hope in the country.
Obi arrived in Port Harcourt after attending the Daily Times 100th Anniversary celebration in Abuja and was received by NDC members led by the party’s Rivers State Governorship Candidate, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs.
The town hall provided an opportunity for an open and engaging conversation around issues that directly affect Nigerians, including jobs, healthcare, education, security and economic opportunities. Obi reiterated his commitment to investing in three critical areas he described as essential to national development: education, healthcare and lifting people out of poverty.
Drawing lessons from countries that once faced challenges similar to Nigeria’s, Obi highlighted Bangladesh’s progress in rice production, Indonesia’s growth in SMEs, and India’s efforts to lift millions of people out of poverty. He noted that the experiences of these countries demonstrate that nations can overcome significant challenges when led by competent, purposeful, accountable and compassionate leadership focused on the welfare of the people.
A major highlight of the engagement was the enthusiasm and renewed commitment Obi said he witnessed among the people of Rivers State toward participating massively in the 2027 elections and ensuring that their votes count and the people’s mandate is respected.
He stressed that only leaders who emerge from a credible electoral process can truly be called Excellencies, and challenged Rivers State to set the pace for excellent elections in 2027.
Obi expressed appreciation to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs and his team, the Rivers State Working Committee of the NDC, the National Working Committee led by National Chairman Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, as well as the party’s supporters, friends and well-wishers who attended the town hall.
