Talks of a possible rerun of February 25 presidential election keep gaining grounds and an INEC insider has informed that this was one of the discussions yesterday in Abuja when INEC chairman, state commissioners, collation and returning officers met.
Recall that Labor Party candidate Peter Obi has continued his call on the Presidential Electoral Petition Tribunal (PEPT) to nullify APC’s victory and just recently, President Tinubu threatened PEPT that nullifying his victory will bring “anarchy” to the country.
On the other hand, another petitioner of the February 25 exercise, Atiku Abubakar of PDP is insisting that he won in 21 states including FCT and that the tribunal should not nullify the exercise, but declare him the rightful winner of the election.
As INEC prepares to hear the Tribunal verdict, our source said the electoral body is, though no very clearly, preparing for a rerun, in the event the verdict calls for it.
However, our source said yesterday’s meeting was chiefly on assessing collation and returning officers performance and the execution of their assigned tasks as field supervisors during the elections. “This evaluation aimed to identify successes and challenges faced during the electoral process and explore opportunities for improvement in future electoral endeavors,” our source, who begged to be private said.
