With Atiku Abubakar out of the party to his new bride, ADC, a founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prof. Jerry Gana was on Focus Nigeria, a TV programme on AIT where he discussed Peter Obi’s return to PDP.
Professor Jerry Gana disclosed that it was the party that reached out to the former Anambra State governor and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, urging him to return to the PDP.
Gana confirmed ongoing reconciliatory efforts within the party and acknowledged Obi as one of the political figures being courted.
He went on to explain that Obi was not the only person the PDP was targeting for a possible return.
“We are also moving to other persons. But I don’t want to announce until we really get there,” Gana said. According to him, the party is now in a stronger and more stable position to convince former members to return.
“I have a very solid platform. I can now go back to these people and say the platform you were complaining about is now set, proper, and ready to move. I know many of them would respond,” he added.
Peter Obi resigned from the PDP on May 25, 2022, just days before the party’s presidential primaries. He later became the presidential flagbearer of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election.
At the time, Obi said his resignation was due to “recent developments within our party that make it practically impossible to continue participating and making constructive contributions.”
The renewed attempt to bring Obi back comes as the PDP intensifies internal restructuring and seeks to consolidate its strength ahead of the 2027 elections.
